Blue Shed 2019

The United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, the Shakers, had guiding principles of simplicity, utility and honesty. Their beliefs were reflected in furniture of minimalist design, the ladder-back chair first made in the early 1800s being the most immediately recognisable. The underlying principles of Shaker design have specifically influenced the work of mid 20th century Danish chair designers. The chairs I have made for this years Blue Shed exhibition have their roots in the original Shaker ladder-back chairs. All are made from English Ash and Elm.
